How To Super Smash Bros 101

Controls

When the first Super Smash Bros. game came out, the only usable controller to play the game was the Nintendo 64 controller. As the years passed by there have been much more ways to play each new Smash game that comes out.

All Moves And Their Meaning

Dash, Jump, Crouch

A dash is performed by flicking the control stick left or right to move across the battlefield. A jump is performed by pressing up on the control stick or pressing the jump button. Double jumping is performed by jumping twice. A crouch is performed by pressing down on the control stick and it is used to dodge high hitting attacks.

Tilts And Jab

Tilts are performed by flicking the control stick and attack button in a given direction. A jab is performed by pressing the attack button with no directional input. Tilts and jabs are typically used for starting combos, spacing(attacking to keep distance from opponent), and juggling(attacking which prevents opponents from landing on the stage).

Smash Attacks

Smash Attacks are performed by pressing the control stick and attack button simultaneously in a given direction. Smash attacks have the highest knockback out of any other move. They are used to finish off opponents or to deal a lot of damage.

Aerials

Aerials are performed by attacking in the air in a given direction. A neutral aerial is performed by pressing the attack button in the air with no directional input. Aerials are used for combos and sometimes to finish off an opponent.

Specials

Specials are performed by pressing the special button. Specials are the most unique moves in a character's moveset and have varying uses.

Shielding

Shielding is performed by pressing the shield button. Shields are used to block all attacks but they can break when receiving too much damage.

Dodging(Spot Dodge, Roll, Air Dodge, Directional Air Dodge)

Dodging is used to dodge all attacks without having to take shield damage. A Spot dodge is performed by pressing shield and down on the control stick to dodge in place. A Roll is performed by pressing shield and left or down on the control stick. An Air dodge is performed by pressing shield in the air to avoid getting hit by an aerial. A Directional Air Dodge is performed by flicking the control stick in any direction other than upwards while pressing the shield button.
