How To Super Smash Bros 101

How To Get Good

General Tips

  • Play around with all the characters in the roster. Eventually find a character that you are good at and make that character your main. Learn that character's moveset and don't keep switching mains every week because that can lead to constant relearning of characters and slow improvement.

  • Know other character's movesets so that you know what moves to deal with when facing your opponent.

  • Watch videos of pro players and participate in tournaments. Losing and learning is better than winning and not learning anything.

  • Stop making bad habits and review your mistakes by saving your match replays.

Advanced Techniques

Dash-dancing

Gif of Dash-Dance
Dash-dancing is performed by flicking the control stick left and right rapidly on the ground. It is used to fake out your opponent when they think you are about to attack.

Directional Influence

Directional Influence or DI, is performed by rapidly flicking the control stick in an optimal position to survive or escape an opponent when getting launched. Usually it's best to DI towards the top corners when launched up to improve survivability and DI away from the opponent when getting launched to avoid getting into a combo situation.

Pivoting

Pivoting is performed by flicking left and right with the control stick almost instantaneously on the ground allowing to perform an attack or grab while dashing. In Smash Ultimate, you are allowed to attack during a dash without needing to do this hard technique.

Wavedashing

Wavedashing is performed by holding the control stick diagonally towards the bottom left or bottom right on the ground, then jumping and immediately pressing the shield button. Wavedashing is the best movement tool in Smash Bros. Melee. It was later removed in the games after Melee.
