Baroque Period

Rhythm:

Energetic, lively rhythms, often with an 18th century dance character.

Texture:

Strong, spirited melodic ideas in both upper and lower parts, sometimes with parts copying each other. The pieces also tend to have clear, contrapuntal texture, with imitations between parts.

Ornament:

Melodic decorations and ornamentations, especially at the ends of phrases.

Dynamics:

Limited dynamics, with rare use of crescendo and diminuendo.

Structure:

AB Construction ( binary construction).

Articulations:

Crisp, light articulation; limited pitch range (to reflect the original use of a harpsichord).

Cadence:

Obvious cadences usually occurring only at the ends of main sections.
