Texture
The number of parts/ voices in the piece; how they're related to each other; nature of overall sounds. There are four different textures- monophonic texture, contrapuntal texture, chordal texture, and melody with accompaniment.
Structure
The form of the piece; the way in which the musical ideas are organized, connected, and interrelated. There are two types of form of a piece: binary and ternary. Binary is known as AB construction because there are two main sections in a piece. Ternary is known as ABA construction because there are three main sections in a piece.
Rhythm
The patteren of the movements in time. It is closely associated with the term meter.
Ornaments
The modification of music;use to make music more beautiful or effective. There are different types- grace notes, trills (shakes), arpeggiations, turns, appoggiaturas.
Articulation
The way in which you execute the notes.
Dynamic
The aspect of music relating to degrees of loudness. For example, pp for pianissimo (very soft), p for piano (soft), mp for mezzo-piano (medium soft), and mf for mezzo-forte (medium loud). Loud is written as f (for forte), and very loud is written as ff (for fortissimo).
Tempo
The speed of the notes. You can use a metronome (also known as Maelzel's metronome) to keep your tempo steady.
Melody
A pattern of different notes performed one after another. The patteren is formed by the pitches of the notes and by their rhythms.
Tonality
Tonality of a piece= Major/ Minor
Cadence
A melodic or harmonic configuration that creates a sense of resolution (finality or pause).
Harmony
The use of simultaneous tones, notes, or chords.
Character
Referring to the tonality, articulation, rhythm, and dynamics.
