Dr. Liang-Yun You

Dr. Liang-Yun You was born in Shanghai, China. She came to the United States in 1991 to study with Mrs. Sedmara Rutstein at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she earned her Bachelor of Music in 1995 and an Artist Diploma in 1997. She continued her studies with Mr. Jerome Lowenthal at the Juilliard School where she earned her Master of Music in 1999. Ms. You earned her DMA in Piano Performance while studying with Mrs. Nancy Weems for five years at the Moores School of Music.

During her years studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Ms. You was the winner of the Arthur Dann Competition as well as the Concerto Competition. She was the Second-Prize winner of the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition. While she was studying at the University of Houston, Dr. You was the First-Prize winner of the 2000 TMTA Collegiate Solo Competition and the Moores School of Music Concerto Competition, 2000. As an internationally known artist, she has performed as the feature soloist with the Moores School of Music Symphony Orchestra, Symphony North, the Clear Lake Civic Symphony Orchestra, the Baytown Symphony Orchestra, the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra, the Oberlin Civic Orchestra, the Lorain County Community Orchestra, and the Chihuahua State Philharmonic Orchestra in Mexico.

As an active soloist in the Houston are she has performed many concerts including the “West Side Piano Series” at Houston Community College, the “Up Close” recital series at Lee College, “Meet the Artist” with the Clear Lake Symphony Society, the Texas Music Festival Piano Institute, the Forum Music Teachers Association, the Young Artist Showcase, as well as various faculty recitals at the Moores School of Music. Ms. You also gives so recitals regularly in the bay area.

As an experienced teacher, Dr. You was an Affiliated Artist at Moores School of Music where she taught the graduate level of the Piano Pedagogy Course. She held the position of Piano faculty as well as the program coordinator of the Preparatory and Continuing Studies at Moores School of Music. Her students won numerous competitions. All of her students have received Distinction marks at The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music every year. Some of her students were accepted as piano majors at universities such as University of Houston, University of Texas-Austin, Southern Methodist University, Berklee College of Music, and New York University. She was also the Vice President at the Forum Music Teachers Association, Houston, Texas. She is currently a member of Music Teachers Association of California. Dr. You is invited annually to the Xing Hai Conservatory of Music to give lectures and masterclasses. Dr. You is also invited as a judge for many competitions in the Bay Area. In 2010, she was invited as a faculty member for the Steinway Society Mid-Summer Youth Music Camp. In 2007, she was also featured in the South Bay News of the World Journal (Chinese Newspaper).
